Is it possible to use statistics to find your eczema triggers?
January 20, 2026
- Bayesian statistics can be used to estimate whether triggers are associated with eczema flare-ups.
- Users log their triggers and flare-ups, and a beta distirbution will update the trigger probabilities personalizing them to the user.

How does this “trigger chance” calculation work?
Eczema flare-ups often feel random, but Bayesian statistics can help estimate which triggers are most likely affecting your skin.
The idea is simple: every time you’re exposed to something that might be a trigger (like certain foods, weather changes, stress, or skincare products), you watch to see whether a flare-up happens within the next 24 hours. If it does, that exposure slightly increases the chance that this thing is a trigger for you. If it doesn’t, the chance goes down. Over time, the system learns from your real-life experiences instead of relying on generic advice.
Behind the scenes, this learning process uses something called a beta distribution. You can think of it as a flexible scorekeeper that tracks “evidence for” and “evidence against” each trigger. Every exposure followed by a flare adds weight to the “yes” side, and every exposure without a flare adds weight to the “no” side. Early on, the system is unsure and cautious. But as more data is collected, the probabilities become sharper and more personalized. Instead of guessing, you get clearer answers about which triggers actually matter for your skin.
If you want to explore possible triggers or track them over a longer period to get more accurate, personalized results, you can get started at Honeybadger Care. The more consistently you log exposures and symptoms, the stronger and more reliable the insights become.
